TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan---Around P3.9 million worth of livelihood assistance was given to some 776 tricycle drivers and operators by the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Office No. 2 (DOLE 2) in 2013.

The assistance to the beneficiaries, which are members of some 13 tricycle operators and drivers associations (TODAs), will enable them to undertake business enterprise specifically sales of motorcycle parts and services, according to DOLE 2 Regional Director, Atty. Sixto T. Rodriguez, Jr.

“Tricycle drivers are vulnerable workers because they don’t have fix income.  Our livelihood assistance to them aims to augment their income and ease them with the burden of repairing their tricycles because they can pay on installment basis or discounted prices of availed motorcycle parts and services,” Atty. Rodriguez stated.

The Lawyer Director advised the beneficiaries to make use of the assistance properly.

“Financial assistance from the government will not come to you every day. The amount we have given you may be small, but if it is implemented well, it will help lessen your financial burden” Atty. Rodriguez added.

Among the provinces, Isabela had the most number of beneficiaries totaling to 396 tricycle drivers and operators coming from 6 associations with P1.91 million total worth of assistance.

It was followed by Cagayan with 169 beneficiaries in 2 associations with P0.78 million worth of assistance.

In Nueva Vizcaya, there were 144 beneficiaries in 3 associations with P0.88 million financial assistance.

On the other hand, Quirino province had 57 beneficiaries from 1 association with P0.31 million financial assistance.

Meanwhile, Rodolfo Pattung, President of the Gattaran East TODA of Gattaran, Cagayan was very elated when he received the livelihood assistance for its association amounting to P330,000.

“We are happy that at last, the DOLE assistance to our association is now in our hands.  We thank you very much for this support.  As president of the GETODA, I promise that we will safeguard this fund and make our project profitable,” Pattung stated.

As counterpart of the project, the Local Government Units of the recipients conducted a social preparation and entrepreneurship development training to the officers of the TODAs. (End/RBE)
